The 200 km (124 miles) stretch of road between Alice Springs and Barrow Creek in Australian Outback had zero speed related fatalities between 2001 and 2011. There was a 130 km/h (81 mph) speed limit in 2006 which resulted to increased accident figures. 


 


Hence the authorities decided to cancel the speed limit on that highway for 12 months, starting from February 2014. Ôhe transport minister said that “we are bringing responsibility back to motorists – they need to be able to drive to the road conditions and their capabilities”.
